Peter Schandl


Paul Schandl runs the winery, owned by the family since 1741, together with his wife Elle and with the support of his mother Ursula and his father Peter. As a traditionally minded citizen of Rust, Paul Schandl has put an emphasis on preserving and reinforcing historical grape varieties such as Furmint, Gelben Muskateller and Welschriesling; as well as the sweet wine specialty Ruster Ausbruch.

ā€˛ To me, this is the only sweet wine uniting fire, fruit, finesse and balance. A sensory firework created by Natureā€¯, Paul Schandl describes the multifaceted, powerful sweet wine with an endlessly shiny finish and nearly unlimited longevity.

The strong bond to tradition is nevertheless no obstacle to Paul Schandlā€™s openness towards new developments. Thus he was able to complete his professional training on renowned wine estates in South Africa, New Zeeland and California. In times of emerging wine making regions it is crucial to be knowledgeable of established procedures while retaining a spirit of curiosity and inquiry.
