CITY OF THE STORKS AND OF THE NOBLE WINES

The free statutory city of Rust, also known as town of the storks and of the noble wines, is located on the west coast of the lake Neusiedl, close to the Hungarian border.

The historic city centre bears evidence of the ancient viticulture tradition – a picturesque ensemble of well preserved town houses from the 16th to the 18th century with splendid baroque and renaissance facades. A range of prominent buildings like the Fisher Church, the old Town Hall, the Powder Tower or the Guardians House together with the numerous stork nests on the rooftops make the entire historic city to one of the most beautiful ones in the country. Since 2001 Rust has been declared UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The Wine Academy Austria, the first institution of this kind in the German speaking countries, is situated in Rust.
